J.S.Bach - Mass in B Minor
7.30pm, Saturday 17 March 17, 2012 at St Nicholas' Church, Sevenoaks
The Cantate chamber choir invite you to join them for what promises to be a highlight of the 2012 musical calendar: J.S. Bach’s B Minor Mass, performed with period instrument orchestra Vivace! and soloists from The Royal Academy of Music in London.
Bach’s final large-scale work was completed only a year before his death in 1750, and stands as one of the greatest works of the Baroque and of all Western composition. Five soloists, chorus and an orchestra comprising strings, woodwind and brass combine to majestic affect. Bach sets the words of the Mass with explosive drama, exquisite tenderness and blazing glory in equal measure. Unlike the Passions here there is no recitative to tell the story, and Bach displays mastery of every musical style as one movement follows another without interruption.
For this concert the choir are joined by their sister orchestra Vivace!, with regular leader Hazel Brooks. The orchestra calls on professional musicians from London and the south east, many of whom work with some of the UKs leading period instrument orchestras, and who are also recording artists, soloists and high profile teachers in their own right. All are experts in historical performance, and will bring the high level of musicianship we have come to expect from previous concerts with Cantate. The choir is also very excited to have soloists from the Royal Academy of Music in London for this event. Some of the students are part of the ongoing Bach Cantatas project there, under the direction of Iain Ledingham, and come with a great deal of experience and knowledge of this repertoire. Cantate’s regular Musical Director Robin Walker will take the baton.
Tickets go on sale early in the New Year, and booking is advised, although a few tickets will be made available on the door on the night. Please call the box office on 01732 770570 or call into the Sevenoaks Book Shop who have tickets on sale.
