Brahms enjoyed a long career as performer on the most romantic of instruments, the pianoforte. Yet for a composer of immense works in other genres, he seems to have made the piano his vehicle primarily for shorter and highly intimate works. The mood of this Intermezzo is serene but perhaps with a quiet yearning.
