All of Schumann's published works before 1840 were for the piano and most had titles which suggested that for the composer at least there was some pictorial or extra-musical idea behind the music. This piece literally means 'upswing' but is usually translated as 'soaring'. Certainly the restless rhythms and upward motifs incline us to think of man yearning after something better.
